Mission Request

I’m Tom Martin with Cancun Fellowship Church in Cancun, Mexico. Cancun Fellowship Church is non-denominational fellowship deeply involved with mission outreach in the Yucatan Peninsula. There is a constant need to help those in need and doing God's work keeps us centered on our true purpose in life. A very large percentage of our population lives in poverty and we feel that children should never suffer when the Lord has provided us with the ability and desire to help them.

Our mission outreach includes primary assistance to Casa Hogar para Ninos Esperanza, Cancun’s Christian orphanage, located in Colonial Alfredo Bonfil, Mexico. The "House of Hope and Faith" is operated by Pastor Asencio Mancilla and his wife Esther and was started 21 years ago when someone left an infant on their doorstep.

Volunteers from Cancun Fellowship Church, Cancun Christian Fellowship, Cancun Fellowship Church Wednesday Christian Men’s Group, Cancun Fellowship Church Wednesday Christian Women’s Group, Community of Faith Cancun English Service and our Mission Partners worldwide supply food, clothing, medical treatment, facility maintenance and Christian activities for the wonderful children that our Lord has placed in our care. Ages range from two to seventeen and all have a history of abuse.

With all we have done, we want to do much more and we need your help.

The orphanage currently needs:
1. Size #6 Diapers / Jumbo
2. Books in Spanish and Games
3. Children’s Clothes and Shoes (any size - any gender)

I am not asking you are your church to buy these items. I am requesting that you pass our request on to your friends, church small groups, men's groups and women's groups for consideration. We will be happy to email updates and photos as often as desired to the groups that participate. Additionally, phone calls and site visits by church members are always welcomed.

There is also a need for mission groups from other churches to assist us with repairs and improvements to the orphanage as time and schedules allow.

Please consider our request. We hope your light will shine on us. If you would like to share your thoughts, have questions, desire additional information, please call. We have a US phone number in our home in Mexico. We can usually be reached at 713-529-8078, and should someone not be available, please leave a message and Cherilyn or I will return your call.

Thank you, your consideration is appreciated. Tom

12 29 2010 Newsletter and Mission Outreach Update

12/29/2010

“We must adjust to changing times and still hold to unchanging principles.” Jimmy Carter

If you are considering a commodity donation, here are some items that are currently needed at the orphanage:
1. Locking file cabinet
2. Diapers size #6 or Jumbo
3. Children’s clothes (any size-any gender)

With the help of our Mission Partners, Cancun Christian Fellowship purchased and delivered eggs, milk, cheese, cereal and diapers to Casa Hogar para Ninos Esperanza this week.

TJ, Henry, Cherilyn and I attended the Christmas Eve celebration at Casa Hogar para Ninos Esperanza and our memories of the event will last a lifetime. We hope you feel as proud as we do because, without your help, the children would not felt many of the joys of Christmas. The evening began with the Pastor and Esther taking the children to the Christmas Eve Service at “The Rock” Church. While they were gone, our volunteers finished decorating their home and placed their gifts around the tree. When they returned, we all enjoyed a delicious dinner that had been prepared in advance by the orphanage staff. After dinner, the children opened gifts and felt the feelings of love that all of you helped provide.

Thanks go out to Laurie, Amy and Cherilyn for shopping for the Christmas gifts for the children. The faces of the children, as they opened their presents, prove the ladies did a wonderful job.

“Maturity doesn't come with age; it comes with acceptance of responsibility.” Ed Cole

We have three groups visiting Casa Hogar para Ninos Esperanza this week. The first group (from Michigan) visited Monday and provided outside toys and shirts for our children. The second group from Denver visited today and brought nineteen dozen (yes, you read that right) unisex shirts, books, toys and shoes for our children. Only God knows what tomorrow will bring.

AND: TJ arranged for a group to visit the orphanage on Monday to take gifts for the children. As always, thanks TJ.

As you browse the new “Photo Gallery” on the website, you will notice that the three young girls have on new Christmas dresses. The dresses were provided by Terri Kemble, a Mission Partner from the US. I know you will agree that the girls looked beautiful in their new dresses. Thank you Terri!

Our website, http://www.cancunchristianfellowship.com/ has been revised and updated with current pictures of our mission outreach and testimony from groups that visit the orphanage. We have added four pages and more will follow as our mission outreach grows.

This week, TJ and I started a new tradition of taking one of the older boys with us on Wednesday. Today was the first day of our new tradition and Enrique went with us to do our “every Wednesday chores”. After that, we took him to lunch (which he inhaled like a Hoover Deluxe). He did not want to act excited around us but Pastor Mancilla told us he had been very excited about spending the morning with us. The Wednesday visits should prove to be enjoyable as well as educational for the boys. Each of them will be able to see how we do what we do for orphanage and learn from the process. Additionally, they will have the opportunity to hang out with a couple of adults that truly want to be with them. PS: Expect to see Henry added to the mix in the near future. There is no way that he is going to allow TJ and me to have all the fun.

“All of God's people are ordinary people who have been made extraordinary by the purpose he has given them.” Oswald Chambers

Food items should always be delivered on Wednesday. If you take a food donation to the orphanage, please send us an email telling us what you donated. It will keep us from duplicating your donation and allow us to put funds in other needed food areas. If you want to make a food donation but do not have time to go to the orphanage, we will be happy to deliver your donation for you on Wednesday.

If you have a clothes or other commodity donation, please give it to Cherilyn Martin or Laurie Lipp for sorting and distribution.

I met with Luis Garcia last week. Many of you remember Luis and have as much respect for him as I do. The meeting was held to discuss a partnership that would allow Christians in Playa del Carmen to work with us to benefit Casa Hogar para Ninos Esperanza. We agreed to talk again in January, 2011. Luis would like to attend a meeting of our Wednesday Christian Men’s Group, join us as we do our Wednesday chores and visit the orphanage.

A Wednesday Men’s Group is offered by Cancun Christian Fellowship. For information, please contact Tom Martin. tommartin@inbox.com or 998-121-1316.

A Wednesday Ladies’ Group also meets in Cancun. For information, please contact Cherilyn Martin. cherilynmartin@inbox.com or 998-121-1315.

14 people were in church last Sunday. If you were not, we missed you. Remember, church now meets at 10:00 AM, Floor B1 at Hotel B2B behind the bull fight arena just east of Avenida Bonampak and Malecon Las Americas. We hope to see all of you Sunday. Tom

Serving God by serving others

12/23/2010

Despite current economic conditions, 2010 has been a great year for Cancun Christian Fellowship. With the help of volunteers from the Cancun Wednesday Christian Men’s Group, the Cancun Wednesday Christian Women’s Group, Community of Faith Cancun English Service and our worldwide Mission Partners, we have been able to substantially increase our assistance to Casa Hogar para Ninos Esperanza, Cancun’s Christian orphanage.  Our mission activity has greatly improved the lives of children that truly need our help.

For all that have been instrumental in our ongoing mission success, we offer a sincere THANK YOU and we hope you join us to make 2011 a triumphant year as servants of  God by serving others.

We received a nice letter from Gloria Derksen, a mission partner from Canada, that we would like to share with you:

Hi Cherilyn,

Thank you for the email - great to hear from you... we arrived home about

1:30 this am - with a suitcase full of warm memories...:) Yes, I would be happy to share our experience with you, will try to get that done sometime this week...We also went back to the orphanage on Saturday, just before we dropped off James and Tammy and John and Shannon at the airport. Abe and I and Neil and Doreen travelled home yesterday. On Saturday we dropped off the food that we had left when we checked out of our condo, plus we had picked up some more yard toys for the kids, as well as some sheets and towels for Ester and a baby gift for Lorena..... we got to meet Lorena as well...We are blessed and I will definitely share more with you in the coming days...We also were blessed to be part of your Sunday morning worship service...thank you for making us feel so welcome :) God bless the awesome work you do. In His grip, Gloria

We offer a very special thanks to Wendy Sombito. Wendy is our Mission Partner Angel with Second Baptist Church in Houston. Wendy goes above and beyond to provide us with quality services like the great Christmas service we viewed this past Sunday. Her compassion for our Christian family is always exemplary.

The website will be revised and updated before the end of the year reflecting new pictures of the Christmas Party and Christmas Eve Dinner at Casa Hogar para Ninos Esperanza. We are also adding a 3rd photo gallery page and a 4th page for mission activity testimony. We receive numerous emails from mission partners and guests that we would like to share.

Nina continues to do marvelous things for Casa Hogar para Ninos Esperanza from US. It seems she has mastered the art of collecting donations for the children. Thanks for all your help Nina, it really makes a difference.

Carolyn and Don Pfennig, Mission Partners from Texas, have graced us with another donation to our mission activity at Casa Hogar para Ninos Esperanza, our Cancun Christian orphanage. Your ongoing faith and support is absolutely appreciated.

If you recently received a popup to update RealPlayer on your PC and downloaded the new version, you may have noticed some changes that you liked and some you disliked. If the dislikes outweigh the likes, here is how you correct the problem by returning to RealPlayer SP. Filehippo.com offers downloads of version SP 1.1.4 and SP 1.1.5. Either version will correct the problem of not being able to export your playlist as well as other irritating issues associated with the new version.

While we are talking about PC issues, you may also have received a popup to download Internet Explorer 9 Beta, Microsoft’s newest browser. If you downloaded the new browser, you may have discovered that Microsoft has not worked all the bugs out of the browser yet. In order to return to your old browser (and the only way I could figure out after hours of trying to download my previous browser) is to click on Control Panel, then double click on the Programs and Features Icon. Next, move to the left side of the page and find View Installed Updates and click on it. That will take you to all the updates that have been added to your computer by Microsoft. Scroll down until you find the added update of Windows Explorer 9. Click on it then click on Uninstall. It will take a few minutes and you will have to restart your computer but it will reinstate your old browser and you will not lose any of your stored information.

It has been a great year for Community of Faith Cancun English Service as well as for our mission activity. We have accomplished a lot and we hope you feel as much personal satisfaction for 2010 and encouragement for 2011 as we do. All accomplishments were possible because of your continued support. Tremendous thanks go out to our church members, the Wednesday men’s group and Wednesday women’s group and to our Mission Partners around the world. Please join us in making 2011 another wonderful year.

If you have a non-food donation (clothing, toys, books, games etc) please bring the item(s) and give them to Cherilyn or Laurie for sorting and distribution. It will allow us to make better use of donated items.

I am very pleased to tell you that Daren and Chris Collymore have increased their financial commitment to our mission activity. Daren is currently working in a combat zone in the middle east while his beautiful wife takes care of things at home in Texas. I have known and loved Daren for more years than I like to count and I am proud to call him a friend and mission partner. Thank you for your continued faith in our work at Casa Hogar para Ninos Esperanza.

Most of you know that Nina and her husband recently returned to the US but their faith and commitment to our work did not end there. Nina rounded up everyone she knew and has forwarded 2 great donations to our mission activity. Nina, thanks for all you do for the children. We hope to see you back soon.

Cancun Christian Fellowship purchased and delivered, diapers, baby oil, diaper rash medication and baby lotion to Casa Hogar para Ninos Esperanza this week.

Choose goodness! Go without a dollar before you take a dishonest one, be overlooked before you boast and confess before you accuse.

Ladies from the Wednesday Christian group finalized there shopping for children’s Christmas at the orphanage. They have really done a marvelous job and deserve everyone’s congratulations.

Pastor Mancilla’s church, THE ROCK, is offering Christmas music Saturday night, December 18th at their facility between the bull fight arena and the B2B Hotel. The music starts at 6:00. Cherilyn and I plan to attend and we hope you join us.

An anonymous member of our church increased their commitment to the orphanage through a donation to our mission work. Thank you for recognizing the importance of our mission activity. We appreciate the contribution and are grateful that you’re family is part of our Cancun family. I trust you realize how much we appreciate your donation as well as your personal labor.

TJ had a great time talking to a fellow passenger on his recent flight to the US and managed to secure a donation for our mission activity at Casa Hogar para Ninos Esperanza.   Everyone is fair game to TJ.

Very few of you had the opportunity to meet Victoria Dreckmann when she visited the orphanage several months ago. If I remember correctly, she found us through TJ’s postings on the internet. While visiting Cancun, TJ and I assisted her with a trip to the orphanage where she presented the younger children with stuffed animals that had been made by children that she works with. I am happy to tell you that Victoria’s commitment to our work did not end with presents. Victoria, her husband Daniel recently made a substantial contribution to our work at the Cancun Christian orphanage. Thank you Victoria, your faith in our Christian family is overwhelming.

Roy Elliott, one of our foreign mission partners, has again increased his commitment to our mission work. Thank you Roy and we hope to see you again very soon.

God does not judge the condition or quality of His church by how good the meetings are on Sunday morning, but by how good the people are on Monday morning.

12/8/2010 Newsletter and Update

12/8/2010

“This is the beginning of a new day. God has given you this day to use as you will. You can waste it or use it for good. What you do today is important, because you are exchanging a day of your life for it. When tomorrow comes, this day will be gone forever, leaving in its place something that you have traded for it. You want it to be gain, not loss; good, not evil; success, not failure; in order that you shall not regret the price you paid for it.” Dr. Heartsill Wilson

“As we prepare for our traditional celebrations, let us remember those who will not be looking forward to this festival. Let us remember too how Jesus identified with the oppressed and the homeless. Let the joy of the festival touch more of the people of our world this year than ever before. May God be glorified and may people of good will once again experience His peace.” Denzil John

New mission partners, “Open Hearts” Sunday School Class in Houston took up a collection for the children’s Christmas. This represents the true spirit of Christmas and serving God by serving others. Thank you!

Cancun Christian Fellowship donated and delivered Beef, Pork, Chicken, Chorizo and Cereal to our Cancun Christian orphanage Wednesday.

“In the same manner in which we clean and prepare our homes in the anticipation of welcomed guests and family members this Christmas season, let us also prepare our hearts in anticipation of the Lord's coming. Christ, our most honored and eagerly anticipated guest, desires to meet with us in a heart prepared for his arrival.” Katherine Walden

We had several communications from Renee Loubert this week. It is always nice to hear from her and to remain thankful for the work she did while living at the orphanage.

We are thankful for a children’s Christmas donation from mission partners Joe and Grace Holland of Cancun. Your faith in our mission activity is appreciated.

Pastor Mancilla is at home recovering from surgery. We visited with him Sunday afternoon and the recovery process appears slow. Please keep him in your prayers.

If you have a non-food donation (clothing, toys, books, games etc) please bring the item(s) and give them to Cherilyn or Laurie for sorting and distribution. It will allow us to make better use of donated items.

Nina is working on a wonderful Christmas surprise for us. If I told you about it today, it would not be a surprise.

TJ donated soap, vegetables and children’s clothing this week. As always TJ, your contribution is appreciated.

The Mission Activity Committee met today to approve expenditures for November and a budget for December. Thanks to you and our mission partners around the world, we continue to serve God by serving others.

Tonight was “Mickey Mouse Celebrates Christmas” night at Casa Hogar para Ninos Esperanza and it was FANTASTIC! 14 mission workers showed up to play Santa’s Helper for the children. Anna handled the face painting, Nancy, Cherilyn and Amy, Alia, Katherine and others worked on crafts with the children (Nancy was also spotted decorating the Christmas tree). Two young ladies from Nancy’s school were also there to help with children’s games. Harold and Henry were the wing nuts that held it all together. A special thanks to Playa del Carmen friends of Cancun Christian Fellowship for furnishing the entertaining movie. The ladies also served cookies, cake, popcorn and drinks. Needless to say the children were excited. A special thanks to everyone that participated.

Of course, food items should always be delivered on Wednesday. If you take a food donation to the orphanage, please send us an email telling us what you donated. It will keep us from duplicating your donation and allow us to put funds in other needed food areas. “For we are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” -Ephesians 2:10

November website activity: November was a great month for website visits. A total of 165 people from 10 countries went on line and looked at our mission outreach activity. That compares to 127 people last month. We have increased recorded views every month. As always, it’s just a matter of time. A special thanks to all the volunteers that do SO MUCH for “our children”.

In keeping with the season, “Cartoon Night” at Casa Hogar para Ninos Esperanza will be Mickey Mouse Celebrates Christmas night. Please put Wednesday, December 8th on your calendar. The movie duration is 77 minutes and, as always, Santa needs helpers. Anna Ruiz has volunteered to be there to do face painting and children’s activities. We will start around 4:30 with a Christmas party for the children and then move in to the movie.

Pastor Mancilla is at home recovering from surgery. Please keep him in your prayers.

Playa del Carmen friends of Cancun Christian Fellowship have increased their commitment and donation to our mission outreach to provide Christmas for the children at Casa Hogar para Ninos Esperanza. It’s great to have friends you can count on. I am always amazed. You’re fantastic.

The Wednesday ladies group continues to Christmas shop for the children and seem to be having a great time doing it. Amy has joined their group and is a real asset. The ladies are glad to have you Amy.

Over the next few weeks, we expect church attendance to increase as many of our group make their annual pilgrimage to Cancun to avoid the cold weather in the US and Canada. Please join us in renewing old friendships.
